On Monday, October 29th, Hurricane Sandy devastated the Rockaway peninsula of New York, nearly wiping it off of the map. Over 100 homes in Breezy Point were reduced to ashes after an unprecedented six-alarm fire ravaged the beach-front community. Firefighters were unable to fight the blaze because the storm surge, which swept many houses completely off of their foundations, was too high, keeping fire trucks from reaching the neighborhood. Those fortunate to still have their homes after the storm subsided suffered severe flooding, forcing them to discard everything in their basements and first floors, as they now must gut their homes completely, including the sheet rock, which was saturated by the toxic and contaminated flood waters.
All proceeds gained from ticket sales of our Annual Concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, held on November 26th, are being put to immediate use to purchase non-perishable food, toiletries, diapers, clothing, and clean-up supplies for those directly impacted by the disaster in Breezy Point, Roxbury, Neponsit, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park, and Far Rockaway.
